FDA warns of risk of death from codeine use in some children following surgeries

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today issued a Drug Safety Communication concerning three children who died and one child who experienced a non-fatal but life-threatening case of respiratory depression after taking the pain reliever codeine following surgery to remove tonsils (tonsillectomy) and/or adenoids (adenoidectomy).

Almond Allergy Alert and Voluntary Recall of a Limited Number of Mislabeled Blueberry Crisp CLIF® Bars

Clif Bar & Company is initiating a voluntary recall today of a small amount of 12-pack Blueberry Crisp CLIF® Bars and individual mislabeled Blueberry Crisp CLIF Bars in Chocolate Chip CLIF Bar Wrappers with one “Best By” date 17MAR13G3 that were distributed to a limited number of stores predominately east of the Mississippi. The 12-packs may contain Blueberry Crisp CLIF Bars that are mislabeled with Chocolate Chip CLIF Bar wrappers and do not list almonds in the ingredient statement. Clif is taking this precautionary safety step for people who are allergic to almonds.

Menno Beachy Recalls Grape Tomatoes Because Of Possible Health Risk Limited Distribution In Minnesota, Wisconsin, And Michigan

Menno Beachy of Cresco, Iowa, is recalling one pint containers of Certified Organic Grape Tomatoes because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail, or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

FDA revises safety information and limits use of Stryker Wingspan brain stent system

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved changes to the labeling for the Stryker Wingspan Stent System, including the indications for use. These changes, which the FDA outlined in a safety communication also issued today, specify a more limited group of patients who may benefit from the system. In addition, the safety communication also describes the new contraindications for the stent system, which is used to open narrowed arteries in the brain to prevent additional strokes.

Reichel Foods, Inc. of Rochester, Minnesota is voluntarily recalling a limited amount of Dippin’ Stix Sliced Apples & Caramel with Peanuts and Armour Active Packs Cheese Pizza Lunch Kits because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
